In our previous post, we explained about the Law of Karma & its operation at a rudimentary level.
Based on the periods of existence, Karma can be classified into 4 types -
Chitt Karma, Sanchita Karmas, Prarabdha Karmas & Agama Karmas.
1. Chith Karma: These are the Karmas that occurs on day-to-day basis by doing mundane activities. Examples include- same patterns of thinking & routine actions.
As per psychology, 95% of time, we perform tasks subconsciously. Only 5% of time we make a conscious effort to change our behaviors & work differently. This afflicts us to Chith Karmas.
Chith is a Sanskrit word which means 'Fallible'.
Various techniques to nullify Chith Karma:
A. Practicing mindfulness meditation and by being non-judgmental:
Practicing mindfulness meditation enables you to experience your emotions and nullify them. Remember nullifying thoughts means nullifying Karma, esp. Chith Karmas.
It's the judgement that afflicts us to Karma! Neuro-psychologically speaking, we have polarizing judgements - good or bad, pain or pleasure & so on, towards everything & everyone, subconsciously.
We can avoid Karmas, by being aware of these subconscious judgements, and seeking forgiveness. This write-off Karmas. The best way is to be non-judgmental towards everything & everyone.
Practicing mindfulness & non-judgementalism detaches you from your thoughts nullifies them, this in turn nullifies Karma.
Now-a-days, people judge saints! People openly disrespect controversial saints like Osho, Sadguru, & so on. On our YouTube channel, we have received comments on Mahavtar Babaji as well. This is mass mentality! These people by judging these great saints, without knowing anything about them are committing a grave mistake, that makes them afflicted to Karmas.
If at all you want to progress spiritually, you need to be non-judgmental! You can't afford to receive the wrath of any Guru Ji or a saint ! Judging Gurus will be rewarded with spiritual descendance.
A deeply spiritual person will respect every spiritual leader, philosophy, religion, & so on !
B. Chanting the holy name of Lord:
Chanting the holy name of Lord Krishna not only increases your vibrations but also nullifies Chith Karma. However, we need to dedicate the chanting to Lord Krishna.
This is confirmed in Chaitanya Charitamrita:
harer nāma harer nāma
harer nāmaiva kevalam।।
kalau nāsthi eva nāsti eva
nāstu eva gatir anyathā ।।
Translation: For spiritual progress, in this Age of Kali, there is no alternative, there is no alternative! There is no alternative to the holy name, the holy name of the Lord Krishna.
So by chanting -
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare ।
Hare Rama Hare Rama ।
Rama Rama Hare Hare ।।
And by dedicating it to Lord Krishna, we are not only burning off Karmas but also nullifying them.
Chanting Hymns-
By chanting hymns like Hanuman Chalisa, Vishnusahasranama & so on and dedicating it to Lord Krishna nullifies our Karmas.
Dedicating our being to the service of God:
As we dedicate each deed as a service to God and our being to Lord, we could nullify all our Karmas.
This is described as 'Karma Yoga' in Bhagavad Gita.
Lord Krishna tells Arjuna; 'Mayi sarvani karmanaam sanyasva.' It means, dedicate everything (Karmas, existence etc.) to me (Lord) This is confirmed by Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita through the following shloka (stanza): yajnarthat karmano 'nyatra loko 'yam karma-bandhanah I tad-artham karma kaunteya mukta-sangah samachara II Translation - Work done as a sacrifice for Vishnu has to be dedicated to Vishnu himself. Otherwise work binds the one to this material world. Therefore, O son of Kunti, perform your prescribed duties for my satisfaction, and in that way you will always remain unattached and free from bondage of Karma.
2. Sanchitha Karma: These are the Karmas that remain for long times through incarnations & have to be burnt off either through enjoyment or through sufferings.
"Kundalini Awakening is the process of burning all our Chith & Sanchitha Karmas."
Sanchitha Karmas especially bad karmas are very painful to burn! It generally takes years together to burn them off.
Although some of our Karmas are paid through either going to hell or heaven, some of them are retained in the form of Sanchitha Karma. Ex.- Most of the long term illness we are suffering, are due to bad Sanchita Karmas.
Chitha Karmas which remain in our account for too long gets transformed into Sanchitha Karma. It's always better to nullify Karmas, on day-to-day basis. This maintains higher vibrations along with a strong aura.
Can't we burn off Sanchitha Karma by not paying off through enjoyment or suffering??
The answer is not fully. Sri Jayateertha Guruji in his scripture 'Sriman Nyayasudha' that through sincere & honest devotion and dedicating our being to Lord Vishnu, he will reduce the intensity of Sanchita Karmas by reducing our suffering, up to a certain extent. This is the beauty of Bhakti Yoga.
Ex.- A person was supposed to have stage 4 terminal cancer, due to bad Sanchita Karmas. Lord considering his devotion, may reduce his suffering by early detection of the cancer and correspondingly, curing his illness with chemotherapy & radiation.
We can give n no of examples. We don't know how many times he has saved us from grave sufferings.
Acharya Madhwa propounded in his Dwaita philosophy;
'Wisdom alone could never give you salvation, wisdom coupled with devotional practice(Bhakti Yoga) can only give you salvation.'
Before we move on to Prarabhda Karmas, let's understand the concepts like Roopa Yogyata & Swaroopa Yogyata.
What's this 'Roopa Yogyata'??
'A soul has a certain ability to receive & transmit cosmic energy, both positive or negative, in his incarnative form through various good or bad Karmas performed through various human incarnations.'
Whenever a person has done good deeds across multiple incarnations, it's displayed by a person's ability to focus, receive wisdom, interpret it and digest it. It's also displayed by your ability to sit and meditate for longer hours etc. in the current incarnation. This is an example of Roopa Yogyata of a person, who had done good deeds, across incarnations.
What's this 'Swaroopa Yogyata'??
It's understood that soul continuously transcend and descend through incarnations before attaining salvation. The initial ability of the soul which is far beyond the 'Roopa Yogyata' is 'Swaroopa Yogyata' Swaroopa Yogyata is a constant.
Ex.- some souls are originally aliens from other ascended planets, by committing some crime they get cursed and fall to the earth. Here, they incarnate as animals, birds, humans & what not. Finally, they will be back to their planets, by attaining Nirvana.
So here the ability possessed by an alien represent 'Swaroopa Yogyata'. Roopa Yogyata in someway, is dependent on the Swaroopa Yogyata.
Understand that Swaroopa Yogyata represents permanent capacity to receive cosmic energy of a soul. Roopa Yogyata is not constant, it's fluctuating as per the Karmas, across incarnations.
3. Prarabdha Karmas: These are also called 'Pracheena' Karmas. Pracheena means old or having existed for longer times. These can be written off only through enjoyment or suffering. Prarabdha Karmas are based on 'Swaroopa Yogyata'.
Whenever a soul commits good deeds or sins beyond your Swaroopa Yogyata, the soul will be made to stay in the earth till it's written off. This excess Karma, good or bad is called 'Prarabhda'.
4. Agama Karmas: Agama in Sanskrit means 'something that occurs in the future.'
As you proceed further in spiritual awakening, after nullifying all your past Karmas, and nullifying present karmas, you will also be preventing the further occurrence of karmas to you. There by, you'll be forever free from Karmas & Karmic debts so on. Eventually, you'll be forever free from this painful cycle of death and rebirth.
You can prevent 'future karmas' by daily submission of your Karmas to the Lord. You need to pray him, to write off all your Karmas.
In the coming parts we will be explaining about types of Karmas based on their inherence, about Karmic debt, and other related concepts.
